Site News and Updates
  May 29, 2006 - Site Updates
  • Added Introduction to Valentinus essay. The essays will soon have thier own section but as there is just one it is a direct link for now.
  • The Application shows Scriptorium 2.0 in the Title bar, which is due to the fact that it is the second program I have written with that title. The 1.0 refers to the build, so Scriptorium should, I guess, be called 2.1.0 (Version, major buid, minor build). I will fix this is the next revision. Sorry for the confusion.
  • There is an undocumented 'feature' (a real feature, not a Microsoft feature!) in the text editor. The Font toolbar has a button which launches the loaded document in the Windows default program for the currently loaded document. So, if you have Office, it will probably load the RTF documents in Word, and TXT documents in Notepad. This is so you can print the document, or edit it in a "richer" editor. It is experimental so let me know if you have problems with it. You can change the default program for any file type by right clicking on a file, selecting 'open with' and checking 'Always open with' in the dialog after you select the program (or see the Windows help. Its really easy).

May 21, 2006 - Scriptorium 1.0 now available on the download page.
The full version of Scriptorium is now available see the download page for full details. As promised, here is a tentative list of future add ons:
  • Apocrypha - at least one version, probably 2 or 3
  • The Books of Enoch - including the Bruce translation of 1 Enoch.
  • Primary Texts of the Medieval Kabbalah - such as the Sepher Yetzirah, The Zohar and Bahir

  • More reference works are also planned, with
  • Matthew Henry's Commentaries - both Full and Concise
  • Apocrypha - at least one version, probably 2 or 3
  • Nave's Topical Bible
  • Torrey's New Topical Textbook
  • King james Concordance
  • Theosophical Dictionary

  • If there are works you think might be useful (that are in the public domain) that you do not see, please suggest them!

There will be updates and patches as needed so please bookmark and check back now and then.

May 18, 2006 - The Installation, Quick Start and Admin Guide has been uploaded to the Documentation page. You can download it by clicking here. Note that both the Install guide and the UI Reference will be included in the distribution Zip file, so you don't have to download it seperatly, unless you want to. The release of the full version is on track for this weekend. I will probably post the files on Sunday evening.
    Thanks everyone for your interest!

      May 9, 2006 - Scriptorium has a release date!
(note: I am pushing the date back a week, sorry)
Monday May 22nd, 2006 will see the release of the full version of Scriptorium.
All of the testing is done. The Database and Admin Guide is almost ready. The full release version will include everything in the beta plus Scripture Linking, Book import from the (greatly expanded) options panel and a lot more. Plus the Import tool has been fixed up. When the full version goes up I will also post a list of future add-ons and modules that are in progress. That includes Bible creation (Codex first) tools, database maintanence tools and some export features for things like Bibliography.

April 22, 2006 - The draft version of the Scriptorium Core UI Reference is available on the documentation page or by clicking here.

April 17, 2006 - The Corpus Hermetica is now avaialable on the download page as a module. It was compiled from the G.R.S. Meade translation.

April 14, 2006 - The Pistis Sophia is now avaialable on the download page as a Module. It was compiled from sources on the Internet (mostly from Internet Sacred Text Archives version) from the G.R.S. Meade translation.

March 31, 2006 - The URANTIA Book is now available on the download page. The work is definitly in the public domain - as there is NO valid copyright holder - and the confusion stems from undated information that was 5-10 years old and the fact that there were several lawsuits between 1997-2003. As the WWW gets older this sort of thing will happen more and more, I guess. Concerning the copyright case, the entire story of the Oklahoma trial denying the Urantia Foundation's copyright and subsequent appeals (all the way to the Supreme Court!) is also posted online. The module was not compiled from any version owned by the Urantia Foundation.

March 30, 2006 - The Final Beta Release is now available on the Download Page. If you have the first Beta you should replace it with Beta 2 (or you can download binaries only).
March 26, 2006 - The second (and final) Beta release is nearly ready to go up. After a bit of trouble with my new laptop, the modules are tested and the bug list is done. The Html editor has been modified so that the links and includes function are gone but the rest of the form works very well. The links and includes functions were trickier that it looked since the UI creates the HTML by reading the rich text, which means, in a nutshell, that there was no way to ensure the text and HTML output matched up if the text was edited after a link was defined or an image was added. On the good side, the HTML output is easily edited in a real editor like Dreamweaver or the free but useful ASP Web Matrix. I will put alink on the Resources page.

On to the good news, then. The crash I had with the lap top actually turned out ok. HP picked it up, fixed it and had it back within 72 hours, though I am still a bit uncertain what 'actually' was wrong. The tech support guys re-imaged the hard drive so I can't really say it's not going to happen again but I will be even more careful about backups. Anyway, the Module code was (naturally) on that computer so I had to rewrite that whole class and the integration but while I was doing the code (for the second time) I realised that the same idea could be used for References like Eastons Dictionary which is already in the first release. So the next release will contain the previously mentioned Bible modules (no Urantia book though, the copy right situation is somewhat murky) plus the Basic English Bible. These are all Bibles included in a majority of Scripture tools. Along with them there will be five reference 'plugins' :
  • Easton's Bible Dictionary
  • Smithe's Bible Dictionary
  • King James Bible Dictionary
  • International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
  • Concise Bible Dictionary

  • As previously mentioned, executable and libraries must be updated to use the new modules but all that is required is that you download and unpack the files into your Scriptorium directory ( this will overwrite the old )
Barring any more technical glitches I am planning on a release around 3/31.

      March 24, 2006 - Site Updates:
  • New screen shots showing the new features that will be in Beta 2. See them here
  • Added online versions of the new reference tools. There is a browser (by reference) page and a search page.
See the Browse page here / See the Search page here.

  •
March 18, 2006 - The first Scripture modules are done and as soon as the new EXE is QCed they will go up on the download page. The first batch includes:
  • World English Bible - Whole Bible

  • Douay-Rheims (Catholic) Bible [No Apocrypha] - Whole Bible

  • Darby's Bible
  • - Whole Bible
  • Young's Literal Translation
  • - Whole Bible
  • LDS Scriptures - Book of Mormon and the LDS Bible - Whole Bible plus

  • You will have to update the EXE to use the modules (or you can download the whole thing again if you really want to).
Also, I am looking at the possibility of expanding the Webbrowser (or creating a new Document type) for HTML documents, as that seems the way things are going and many bibles and other books are available in HTML for free download - and also adding an HTML panel to the Scriptures form for commentaries, dictionaries, etc.
The RTF-HTML section is also being overhauled and I will post some screens / details soon.
    Thanks!
Note: The Hebrew Bible has an error in the Texts table.
I will fix it in the next release but in case you want to fix it now (or you don't want to overwrite your database for a little thing like this!) you can:
Open the Exegesis database in Access. In the 'Texts' table change the NameTable to 'bible_books'. That will take care of the issue.

March 14, 2006 - Runnning through a short list of bugs. Documentation is coming along. It will be a while before it is perfect but I will get a draft posted as soon as possible. I am making some changes to the HTML tools, mostly trying to make the form easier to use, even though that means trimming the functions that it supports, as it stands now it's too complicated. If I can get it to convert straight RTF files to HTML it should be sufficient. Anything more complicated and Dreamweaver or something like it is really better than trying to overload the thing and end up making it practically speaking, useless. There should be a 'patched' EXE within a week or two and I am also trying to get additional scripture ready as well. The first couple should include the Book of Mormon, a couple of other Bible/NT translations and maybe a 'New Agey' text like the Urantia book.
